Following your initial examination, I spend time outside of your visit building you a treatment plan tailored to your condition and the examination findings. The “Instructions” are made available to you via the Charm EHR that I use (and can also be emailed to you) and is based on the premise that neurons need 3 things in order to be health and happy: Fuel, Oxygenation and Activation. It will look something like this:
FUEL:
Dietary Changes:
Supplements:
OXYGENATION:
Deep breathing and Meditation:
Physical Exercise:
ACTIVATION:
Referrals/Labs/Imaging/Studies:
TOOLS:
EXERCISES:
The Fuel and Oxygenation pieces are to set the foundation so that the Activation can actually “stick.” Often times patients come to me having seen many practitioners before and although they may have been prescribed supplements or told to go gluten-free or told to exercise more or given visual/vestibular exercises that don’t seem to make a difference, it is because the triad of these 3 important factors has never been implemented and never explained.
Many times I am asked what “functional neurology” exercises look like. As I have blogged about in the past, functional neurology is similar to physical therapy for the brain. A combination of visual, vestibular and proprioceptive (or somatosensory) exercises will be prescribed. Some will be done in the office and some will be done between visits. In order to make changes in your neurology (AKA neuroplastic changes or neuroplasticity) patients MUST commit to following the treatment plan including the prescribed home exercises. They are typically short in time to complete, but done frequently throughout the day.
If you’re interested in an evaluation and getting on a treatment plan, please reach out via email at [email protected] or calling as well as texting 503.660.8874. Always accepting new patients.
